Overview

County Councils are are used where there is a two-tier system of local government, of which they are the higher tier. They encopass a number of smaller District Councils, which are the lower-tier. County Councils are responsible for things such as Education, Transport, Fire, Social Services, and Libraries.

Containing large amounts of rural areas, County Councils are very Conservative, with only one council not currently being under Conservative control, Cumbria.

Usually, all County Councils are up for election every 4 years. The elections in Cumbria, North Yorkshire, and Somerset, however, have been postponed to 2022 due to local government restructuring.
