Polling Average – Second Round
Voters in Finland will be electing a new President on the 11 February. The President is elected by a two-round system; if no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote in the first round, then the top two candidates will head to a runoff on 11 February. The President is elected to a six year term.
In the first round, no candidate got more than 50% of the vote, so the top two candidates, Alexander Stubb (Kok) and Pekka Haavisto (Vihr) are heading for a runoff.
The incumbent President, Sauli Niinistö, is not eligible for re-election due to the limit of a Preisdent only being allowed to serve two consecutive terms.
Finland has a parliamentary system of government, with the President taking mostly a ceremonial role but they do have a major role to play in the nation's foreign policy which leads to that being largely the focal point of the electoral campaign.
