Spanish Regional Elections 2023

Spain's Autonomous Communities

Overview

On 28 May, 12 of Spain's 17 autonomous communities are holding elections to their regional parliaments. Each region uses differnet variations of closed list proprtional representation, each with differnet electoral thresholds and with some subdividing their elections into constitutions while others just have one regionwide constituency.

Castille and Léon was originally scheduled to hold its elections on this date alongside the other regions, but due to holding a snap election last year it now will no longer have an election this year. The Community of Madrid also held snap elections back in 2021 but are still having their regulalry scheduled election this May. The 4 other regions not having elections this year do not typically have their elections alongside the other regions.

PSOE are currently the leading party in governmnet in 9 of the 12 autonomous communites that are holding elections, while PP only lead government in Madrid and Murcia. The regionalist party PRC (Partido Regionalista de Cantabria) leads the government in Cantabria in coalition with PSOE.

PP are expected to easily hold onto control in Murcia and Madrid, the latter of which they have a chance of winning a majoirty in. Most of the other regions are very close between left and right parties combined according to opinion polls.
